Fire safety measures and smoke detector recommendations in Switzerland
In Swiss private households, fire safety relies on a combination of technical aids and personal preparedness. Because smoke can rapidly reduce visibility and impair the sense of smell during sleep, acoustic alarms are critical for providing time to evacuate or contact emergency services (118).
While there is no general legal obligation for all Swiss households to install smoke detectors, fire prevention experts recommend placing them in bedrooms and central locations, ideally one detector per 60 square meters. For optimal function, devices should be mounted in the center of the ceiling, at least half a meter away from walls, lights, or ventilation openings.
