Zawiya refinery gasoline tank collapses after direct attack in Libya
A major gasoline storage tank at the Zawiya refinery in western Libya caught fire and collapsed on Monday following what the National Oil Corporation (NOC) described as a direct attack. The affected tank, numbered 402-T and operated by the Brega Petroleum Marketing Company, contained approximately 4.5 million litres of gasoline.
The NOC has declared an extreme state of emergency in the area and is calling for an immediate investigation. Firefighting teams have been working to contain the blaze and are performing cooling operations on adjacent tanks to prevent further spread. Despite the incident, engineers report that the refinery remains operational.
This event follows a series of recent strikes on the facility, including a drone strike on a naphtha tank this past Saturday. The recurring attacks on critical energy infrastructure have raised significant security concerns in the region. The Tripoli-based government, led by Prime Minister Abdulhamid Dbeibah, has met with security officials to address these developments and emphasized the need to protect vital national installations.
