Gyeonggi Governor Choo Mi-ae faces backlash over fire service budget comments

Gyeonggi Governor Choo Mi-ae is facing intense political and public criticism following her description of fire service funding as a “troublesome financial straw” during a recent National Assembly audit. The controversy escalated after firefighter Kim Jin-seok died in the line of duty while battling a factory fire in Bucheon.

Governor Choo issued an apology at the funeral of the deceased firefighter, stating, “Since you are asking for an apology, I apologize with all my heart,” while clarifying that she did not intend to disparage firefighters but was highlighting the structural burden on local governments following the transition to a national service model.

Opposition leaders from the People Power Party have rejected the apology as insincere and “arrogant,” calling for her resignation. They have criticized her personal expenditures, such as a new official vehicle and high-end residence, contrasting them with her comments on budget constraints. Meanwhile, members of the Democratic Party have also expressed discomfort, with some party members calling for disciplinary action.

In response to the remarks, a comedian sent 250 straws to the Governor’s office as a form of satire, and a labor union representative held a one-person protest demanding a more sincere apology and structural reforms to address the financial gap between national status and local funding responsibilities.
