Firefighters extinguish barn fire after lightning strike in Esch‑Steintal, St. Gallen

On the afternoon of 4 August 2026, a lightning strike ignited a barn in Esch‑Steintal, St. Gallen, Switzerland. The structure burned to the ground, but no people were injured. Four pigs were rescued from the blaze and remained unharmed.

The response involved about 70 firefighters, emergency medical personnel, a veterinarian, the cantonal police and the building insurer. Water was first drawn from a nearby stream before a 5 km hose line was laid to connect to the hydrant network. A drone monitored the surrounding forested area for additional hotspots. The fire caused several hundred thousand Swiss francs in damage, and the ruined barn will be demolished and later monitored with a fire watch.
