Firefighters hold memorial stair climbs to honor 9/11 victims
Various memorial events are being organized to honor the 343 firefighters who died during the September 11 attacks.
In Columbiana County, local fire departments will host a Memorial Stair Climb and walk at Crestview High School’s Rebel Stadium. Participants will climb or walk the equivalent of 110 stories to honor the fallen FDNY firefighters. Proceeds from the event will benefit the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF) to support fire hero families and firefighters.
In a larger international effort, firefighters from the United Kingdom, including a group of nine from Powys, will travel to Georgia to participate in a memorial stair climb at Truist Park. These UK participants are part of a group of 343 firefighters standing in memory of those lost in the 2001 attacks. The climbers will ascend the equivalent of 110 floors while wearing full gear.
