Firefighters in Turkey share deep professional and personal bonds
In Turkey, two distinct stories highlight the personal and professional bonds shared by firefighters.
In Izmir, twin brothers Ahmet and Mehmet Berber have spent 33 years working together in the fire service. The brothers, who started their careers on the same day and married on the same day, serve as fire captains for the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality. Their lives are closely intertwined, from their professional duties in fire and rescue operations to their personal lives, including living in adjacent houses.
In Şanlıurfa, Sadık and Kübra Alkan serve as a firefighter couple within the Şanlıurfa Metropolitan Municipality. The pair met during a fire training program and subsequently married. For approximately seven years, they have worked together on various fire, accident, and rescue missions, including responding to the 2023 earthquakes. They noted that sharing the same profession allows them to better understand one another and find mutual strength during high-stress emergency responses.
