Firefighters' vehicles looted at Greece's Magoula fire base

After returning from multi‑day wildfire operations, members of the 1st Special Unit of Forest Operations (1 η ΕΜΟΔΕ) discovered that their personal fire‑engine vehicles had been broken into and, in many cases, had their wheels removed while parked inside the Magoula base. The incident provoked anger among the firefighters.

The Panhellenic Association of Forest Firefighters (ΠΑ. Σ. ΠΥ. Δ. Ε.) linked the theft to longstanding security and infrastructure shortcomings at the facility, which houses more than 300 firefighters and the Mechanized Special Firefighting Unit (Μ. Ε. Τ. Π. Ε.). The union demanded immediate measures: stronger guard presence, protection of staff vehicles, repair of the damage and a comprehensive upgrade of the base’s facilities. No official figures on the number of vehicles affected or the total cost of the losses have been released.

The firefighters’ statement emphasized dignity, saying “We only demand dignity” ("Ζητάμε μόνο αξιοπρέπεια").
