Firefighters use Sting's song to warn of wildfire risks on social media
Since June, fire services in several countries have posted videos set to Sting’s "Every Breath You Take" to highlight risky behaviours that can spark wildfires. The format began in Iserlohn, Germany, where firefighters released a clip on 28 June showing a man using a garden torch; the video amassed more than 20 million views and spread to the United States and Brazil.
French departmental fire service SDIS Loire adopted the idea, publishing a video of a man lighting a barbecue on a dry lawn, which firefighters quickly doused with water. In just four days the French video reached over 20 million viewers on Instagram. The campaign stresses that, in France, roughly 90 % of forest fires are caused by humans, with 70 % stemming from everyday careless actions such as discarded cigarettes or unsafe equipment, and the remaining 30 % being deliberate acts.
The viral videos aim to remind the public that a single spark during hot, dry conditions can ignite large areas, reinforcing fire‑prevention messages through humor and music.
