Firelight adds $31M in onchain coverage to Kraken USDC vault
Firelight has implemented approximately $31 million of onchain coverage for the Kraken Protected Strategies USDC vault. Curated by Sentora, the vault utilizes this coverage to provide a backstop against specific decentralized finance (DeFi) failures.
Covered events include smart contract exploits, oracle failures, governance attacks, and certain economic failures such as mechanism-driven depegs or redemption failures. The coverage explicitly excludes losses resulting from market movements, such as asset price fluctuations or changes in vault yield. Payouts are capped at $100,000 per depositor address during each 30-day epoch.
Claim validation is managed by a consortium of five independent firms, requiring at least three affirmative votes to activate a payout. Funding for these payouts is drawn from a shared, non-custodial pool of staked funds, including FXRP on the Flare Network, and a protocol-owned first-loss buffer.
Existing Firelight depositors have been automatically transitioned into a phase where their staked capital serves as the coverage pool. This transition includes exposure to slashing risks and longer withdrawal windows of 30 to 60 days. The arrangement is not classified as insurance, and its costs are deducted directly from the vault’s yield.
