Tuscany railway maintenance causes widespread train disruptions

Extensive railway maintenance and infrastructure upgrades in Tuscany will cause significant disruptions to train services throughout October and November.

On the Florence-Pisa line, service will be completely suspended between Empoli and Pisa from October 9 to 11. Regional transport official Filippo Boni described the interruption as “improcrastinabile” (unpostponable), noting its impact on students, workers, and connections between major airports. While replacement bus services are being organized, officials cautioned that they cannot fully match the capacity of the rail service.

Additionally, maintenance on the Tyrrhenian line (Genova-Pisa-Roma) will affect travel between Pisa and Massa Centro, as well as Pisa and Pietrasanta, during several weekends in October and November. These works include bridge maintenance, platform upgrades, and the construction of new pedestrian underpasses in Viareggio and Pietrasanta.

These interventions will lead to cancellations or schedule changes for various high-speed and long-distance services, including Frecciarossa, Frecciargento, and Intercity trains on routes such as Milan-Livorno, Sestri Levante-Napoli, and Ventimiglia-Roma. Commuters are advised to check the Trenitalia app or website for specific updates.
