Taverna del Re waste site fire triggers environmental alert in Campania

A large fire broke out on Sunday, September 6, 2026, at the Taverna del Re waste storage site near Giugliano in Campania. The blaze affected a section of ecoballe—compacted waste bales—that were prepared for transfer. Thick columns of black smoke were visible for kilometers, prompting significant environmental concerns regarding the potential release of toxic substances like dioxins.

Emergency services, including the Vigili del Fuoco, Carabinieri, and NBCR specialists, worked to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to other waste piles. While no injuries have been reported, authorities have taken precautionary measures, including a ban on agricultural harvesting within 500 meters of the site.

Regional officials from Campania, including President Roberto Fico and Environment Councilor Claudia Pecoraro, have been monitoring the situation alongside the Naples Prefecture. ARPAC has activated air quality monitoring stations to assess the impact of the emissions. Investigators are currently working to determine the cause of the fire, and they have not ruled out arson.
