Lugano hosts expansive National Day festivities on August 1
Lugano is preparing a city‑wide celebration for Switzerland’s National Day on 1 August. The program opens at 06:00 GMT with the traditional “diana” and a marching band playing through the historic centre. At 10:15 municipal authorities gather at Palazzo Civico before proceeding on foot to Piazza Indipendenza for the symbolic laying of an laurel crown on the Independence obelisk. A mid‑morning concert by the Castagnola Philharmonic follows.
Afternoon entertainment is provided by the Beat Band, followed later by the Lüganiga Band, which leads a evening parade that routes from Via Nassa to Piazza della Riforma. The parade features local associations, the municipal and cantonal police, volunteer corps and elected officials. After the mayor Marco Chiesa’s official address at 21:15, the civic Philharmonic performs, and the night ends with an eco‑friendly fireworks display – “Sinfonia di luce” – using rice‑paper and biodegradable materials.
The schedule also includes traditional food stalls and a focus on environmental impact throughout the festivities.
