First aid advice for bee and wasp stings

Medical experts and the Stiftung Gesundheitswissen provide guidance on managing bee and wasp stings during the late summer. A key distinction is that bee stings often leave a stinger behind, whereas wasps do not. If a stinger is present, it should be scraped away using a flat object like a credit card rather than being pulled out, to avoid injecting more venom into the wound.

For immediate care, cleaning and disinfecting the area is recommended. To manage pain and swelling, cooling with cold water, ice cubes, or gel packs is effective, though direct contact with ice should be avoided to prevent skin damage. Additionally, applying heat above 50 degrees Celsius may help decompose the protein molecules in the insect venom to alleviate its effects.

In a recent live incident on the ZDF program ‘Fernsehgarten’, moderator Andrea Kiewel experienced a painful sting while filming, which she managed to continue through despite the discomfort.
