First autumn snow falls in Vosges and Black Forest mountains
The first snow of the autumn season has been recorded in the Vosges Mountains in Alsace and on the Feldberg in the Black Forest.
In the Vosges massif, snow appeared on October 24 at locations such as Marckstein and Thannerhubel. Temperatures during the night dropped to between 1°C and 3°C due to wind. While the snowfall is expected to be short-lived as temperatures rise again, it marks the seasonal arrival of cold weather in the region.
Similarly, the Feldberg in the Black Forest saw snow settle on the slopes following previous light flurries. The snow remains primarily at elevations between 1,000 and 1,200 meters. Meteorologists note that while the snow is a seasonal precursor, it does not constitute a full winter onset, as milder temperatures are expected to return shortly.
