First mile logistics and connectivity gain focus through community-centered design
Innovators are shifting focus from “last mile” delivery to “first mile” connectivity and logistics, emphasizing community-led technology and rural infrastructure.
Four industrial design students from the University of Bologna developed ATTA, a human-powered cargo tricycle featuring an integrated lifting mechanism. Designed specifically for banana farmers in rural Kenya, the project won first place in the Product Design category of the Toyota Logistic Design Competition 2026. The design prioritizes local maintainability and human power over complex, imported technology to suit the realities of rural terrain.
Broader discussions in the field of community-centered connectivity are also advocating for a shift in perspective. Rather than viewing remote areas as the final link in a network, proponents suggest placing communities at the center of technological development, testing, and deployment to ensure digital access meets local social and environmental needs.
