First Nations hold major cultural gatherings in Canada

Significant Indigenous cultural gatherings are taking place across Canada, marking major milestones for First Nations communities. In Prince Albert, the Prince Albert Grand Council (PAGC) has opened its annual Gathering of Nations. This year’s four-day event, running from August 25 to August 28, coincides with the 150th anniversary of the signing of Treaty 6. Grand Chief Brian Hardlotte noted that the anniversary serves as a reminder that treaties are “living agreements” involving ongoing relationships and responsibilities.

Simultaneously, the 50th Annual First Nations Elders Gathering took place in Vancouver, drawing approximately 2,340 participants from British Columbia, Saskatchewan, and the Yukon. The event focused on cultural preservation, language revitalization, and the challenges facing Indigenous communities. Elders discussed the impacts of environmental changes, such as global warming and shifting river patterns, on their traditional ways of life and the importance of passing knowledge to younger generations.
