First Nations leaders meet with Canadian First Ministers in Ottawa
First Nations leaders and Canadian First Ministers convened in Ottawa for a two-day meeting on October 25 and 26. The gathering included a day of ceremony and a day of dialogue aimed at addressing key priorities for Indigenous communities.
Major topics of discussion included the implementation of Section 35 rights, economic reconciliation, workforce development, health outcomes, and public safety. A significant point of debate was the potential abolition of the Indian Act, a call supported by Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew. Leaders emphasized that any reform or replacement must respect treaty intent and involve broad partnerships with First Nations leadership.
Other agenda items included the potential for a constitutional amendment to recognize First Nations as a distinct order of government, revisiting the 1930s Natural Resources Transfer Act, and establishing new revenue-sharing mechanisms, such as a sovereign wealth fund. The meeting also addressed the impacts of Bills C-39, C-5, and S-2 on Indigenous governance and decision-making.
