First Nations leaders to meet with Prime Minister Carney and premiers

Assembly of First Nations (AFN) National Chief Cindy Woodhouse Nepinak is preparing for a historic meeting in Ottawa with Prime Minister Mark Carney and provincial premiers. This gathering marks the first meeting of its kind in over two decades.

Relations between the federal government and First Nations have been strained since Carney’s 2025 election, particularly following legislation designed to streamline major project approvals within a one-year timeline. Indigenous leaders have warned that these compressed schedules may infringe upon their rights and lead to legal challenges.

Key points of contention include land claim processes in British Columbia, the Pacific Link pipeline project in Alberta, and the development of the Ring of Fire in Ontario. To prepare, the AFN has held town halls and released position papers covering economic development, policing, public safety, employment, and health.

One major priority for leaders is the establishment of a First Nations sovereign wealth fund, a concept proposed by the Chippewas of the Thames First Nation to build long-term community wealth. Other leaders have emphasized the need to address social issues such as homelessness, addiction, and suicide alongside economic discussions.
