First Niger Bridge to close for two weeks for emergency repairs

The Federal Ministry of Works has announced a two-week total closure of the First Niger Bridge in Onitsha, Anambra State, beginning Monday, September 7, 2026. The bridge is scheduled to reopen on Monday, September 21, 2026, following emergency maintenance and rehabilitation works.

The decision follows an inspection by Minister of Works David Umahi, who noted significant deterioration of the carriageway and structural damage caused by the theft of critical components—including bolts, nuts, and iron rods—by scavengers. The repair work, to be executed by contractor SKECC, will involve milling the old asphalt and laying a new 40mm wearing course. Additionally, the ministry plans to install solar-powered streetlights and CCTV cameras to deter future vandalism.

Motorists are directed to use the Second Niger Bridge via Obosi as an alternative route. While the government has promised traffic control personnel and safety barriers to manage the diversion, some reports have raised concerns regarding the technical approach to replacing structural bolts under tension.
