First Niger Bridge to close for two weeks starting September 7
The First Niger Bridge, connecting Anambra and Delta states, is scheduled for a temporary two-week closure starting September 7, 2026, to facilitate essential repairs. The Federal Ministry of Works announced the closure after inspections revealed defects, including the vandalization of bolts and nuts.
In response, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) have announced measures to manage traffic and ensure motorist security. The FRSC has deployed personnel to strategic locations around Onitsha to facilitate smooth vehicular movement and minimize the risk of accidents.
Motorists are advised to use the Second Niger Bridge as the primary alternative. Recommended routes include the Nkpor–Old Road–Obosi route, the Onitsha–Owerri Road from Upper Iweka, and Atani Road through Uga Junction to the Harbour Industrial Layout.
