First responder protocols and equipment evolve to manage casualties and health risks

First responders are adopting new protocols and equipment to manage mass casualty incidents (MCI) and mitigate long-term health risks. In MCI scenarios, where patients outnumber trained responders, the priority shifts from individual treatment to triage and delegation. Experienced practitioners are encouraged to sort patients by urgency to ensure resources are not wasted on those beyond help, allowing for more efficient life-saving efforts.

Simultaneously, there is a significant shift in personal protective equipment (PPE) design. Traditional porous materials like leather, which can absorb soot and chemical residues, are being replaced by non-absorbent, military-grade synthetics. This evolution toward ‘decontaminability’ aims to reduce the cumulative exposure of firefighters and EMS personnel to carcinogens, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and heavy metals, which can remain trapped in traditional gear long after a call ends.
