FIS approves Russian and Belarusian athletes to compete as neutrals
The International Ski Federation (FIS) has released a list of Russian and Belarusian athletes permitted to compete as neutral athletes during the 2026/27 season. This decision marks a shift in policy, as the federation has eased previous restrictions regarding the return of athletes from these nations.
The inclusion of Russian ski jumper Evgeniy Klimov has sparked significant controversy. Klimov previously displayed a Russian flag during a World Cup event in Lahti following the invasion of Ukraine and was seen wearing a jacket featuring the ‘Z’ symbol, which is associated with the Russian military. He also attended a rally in Moscow attended by Vladimir Putin.
Under the updated FIS regulations, athletes must sign a declaration promising not to display symbols related to the invasion. Additionally, the criteria for exclusion regarding ties to the Russian military have been modified; current rules state that connections to military structures must be voluntary to disqualify an athlete.
