FIS President Alexander Ospelt warns of structural deficit

Alexander Ospelt, the new president of the International Ski Federation (FIS), has revealed a significant financial crisis facing the organization. Ospelt stated that if current trends continue, the federation faces a structural deficit of approximately 20 million Swiss francs (roughly 22 million euros) per year.

Since taking office in June following a narrow 65:64 vote against predecessor Johan Eliasch, Ospelt has focused on addressing strategic errors that reportedly caused the FIS equity to nearly halve between 2021 and 2025. To stabilize the organization, the Liechtenstein lawyer intends to implement cost-cutting measures, including personnel reductions, and seek new commercial partners.

Ospelt also aims to repair fractured relationships with national federations, such as the Austrian Ski Federation (ÖSV), by increasing transparency and communication. He noted that the federation must move away from perceived regional biases and act as a service provider for athletes and sports disciplines rather than pursuing egoistic goals.
