FIS proposes increasing frequency of Ski World Championships

The International Ski Federation (FIS) is planning a major overhaul of its championship calendar. Under the leadership of new president Alexander Ospelt, the federation aims to hold World Championships in non-Olympic years, potentially starting in 2032 and 2036, with a possible additional event as early as 2028.

Ospelt argues that more frequent championships would provide greater financial benefits for athletes and create new opportunities for smaller nations and hosts such as China, Japan, and South Korea. This proposal follows a recent council meeting in Thun where the concept was approved.

The plan has met significant resistance from athletes and former competitors. Former Olympic downhill champion Beat Feuz criticized the move, arguing that increasing the frequency of major events could diminish their prestige. Feuz suggested that the scarcity of such tournaments is part of what makes them special, drawing a comparison to the high status maintained by the FIFA World Cup and European Championship.
