FIS to increase frequency of Winter World Championships
The International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) has announced plans to increase the frequency of its World Championships. Following a decision by the FIS Council at a congress in Thun, Switzerland, the federation intends to move away from the current biennial schedule in odd-numbered years.
The new model proposes holding World Championships annually, with the exception of years in which the Winter Olympics take place. While the official implementation of this new rhythm is set for 2032, the FIS is considering an earlier start with a potential ‘bonus’ championship as early as 2028.
The decision follows a feasibility study that evaluated the sporting value, calendar logistics, and commercial and media rights potential of more frequent events. The changes will impact several disciplines, including Alpine Skiing, Cross-country Skiing, Ski Jumping, Nordic Combined, Freestyle, and Snowboard. While the move aims to increase visibility and marketing opportunities, officials acknowledged it may increase the competitive load on athletes.
