Fish availability and seasonal consumption guidelines in Turkey
In Elazığ, despite the lack of a coastline, fish variety remains high due to efficient logistics from coastal cities such as Trabzon, Rize, Samsun, and Ordu. A notable abundance of bonito (palamut) has positively impacted prices, with reports indicating prices fluctuated between 150 TL and 250 TL per kilogram.
Regarding seasonal consumption, experts advise caution with certain species during November. Swordfish and bluefin tuna are subject to fishing bans during this period to ensure sustainability, with swordfish bans running from October 1 to November 30 and bluefin tuna bans from October 15 to June 15. Additionally, natural trout is under a fishing ban from October 1 to February 28. While sardines remain safe to eat, their oil content and flavor may differ from the summer months.
