Fish die-offs reported in Switzerland and Austria

Two separate incidents involving significant fish die-offs have been reported in Switzerland and Austria.

In Neuhaus, Switzerland, an oil film was discovered in the Dorfbach stream on Wednesday evening, leading to the death of several fish. Authorities believe the pollution was caused by wastewater from a residential basement being cleaned, which then flowed into the stream. Emergency services, including the Eschenbach fire department, deployed oil-absorbent cloths and flushed affected shafts. As a precaution, the Bürg drinking water supply was deactivated.

In Schiedlberg, Austria, a fish farm suffered massive losses following a storm. A fallen tree damaged a power line, causing an electrical ground fault that sent current through the soil into nearby ponds. The breeder reported that approximately 80 percent of thousands of fish died, with estimated financial damages reaching 120,000 euros. The network operator, Netz Oberösterreich, stated that while power lines typically shut off when severed, the cable in this instance was only damaged, allowing current to continue flowing.
