Fisheries officers injured in vessel collision with humpback whale

Two Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) officers were injured following a collision between their vessel and a humpback whale near Calvert Island, British Columbia. The incident occurred on August 9, approximately 100 kilometres north of Port Hardy.

DFO has stated that the specific extent of the officers' injuries cannot be disclosed due to privacy concerns. The agency is currently working with the B.C. Marine Mammal Response Network to locate and identify the whale involved and to document any injuries sustained by the animal. Photos of the incident show damage to the front end of the DFO vessel.
