Fisheries stakeholders discuss Monterey Bay status and Oregon regulations
In Moss Landing, California, stakeholders and fishermen gathered at the Moss Landing Marine Labs to review a report titled “Monterey Bay Commercial Fisheries: Status and Trends.” The report highlights several key findings, including a decrease in the number of participating boats and economic volatility within the industry. It also notes that while salmon and crab setbacks intensified between 2022 and 2024, California halibut has emerged as a significant alternative catch. The Monterey Bay Fisheries Trust is leading the “Future of Blue Initiative” to support the local fishing community and waterfront infrastructure.
In Oregon, the Department of Fish and Wildlife has announced proposed 2027 groundfish regulations. A significant proposal involves the potential for limited recreational and commercial yelloweye rockfish harvesting, which could mark the first such opportunity in over 20 years following successful recovery efforts. Additionally, a proposal exists to add approximately 255 acres to the Lower Deschutes Wildlife Area to increase public land accessibility. The public has until November 11 to submit written comments regarding these regulatory changes.
