Mexican Navy rescues fisherman after eight days adrift near Oaxaca
Héctor Márquez Martínez, a fisherman from Puerto Ángel, Oaxaca, was rescued alive after spending eight days adrift at sea. Márquez, known as ‘Chico Nuca’, originally departed on August 31 aboard his small motorboat, the ‘Josmarcito’, to fish for sailfish.
The Mexican Navy (Secretaría de Marina) launched an extensive search and rescue operation involving coastal patrols, interceptors, and specialized aircraft, including Persuader and King Air models. The search was expanded beyond the Exclusive Economic Zone using a new operational concept. During the disappearance, a merchant vessel spotted Márquez, provided him with supplies and fuel, and recorded his coordinates, which aided subsequent efforts.
The ARM ‘Monte Albán’ eventually located the small vessel approximately 481 kilometers south of Huatulco. Upon rescue, Márquez was evaluated by naval medical personnel; he was found to be in stable condition, suffering primarily from severe dehydration. The successful operation involved coordination between naval forces, local fishermen, and community members.
