Fishermen in Nueva Esparta denounce fuel subsidy retaliation
Fishermen in La Guardia, located in the Díaz municipality of Nueva Esparta, have denounced the use of subsidized fuel supplies as a mechanism for intimidation and retaliation by authorities.
Local workers, represented by fisherman Eliel Rodríguez, report that access to subsidized gasoline is frequently suspended when they must temporarily beach their vessels for essential preventive maintenance. This administrative measure prevents them from resuming their daily work, directly impacting their ability to earn a living. Despite attempts to maintain productivity by partnering with other vessels, authorities have reportedly maintained these exclusions.
The loss of income has significant personal consequences; Rodríguez noted that the lack of funds hinders his ability to afford expensive monthly medications required to treat a neuropathy following a two-year period of being bedridden. The fishing community is demanding fair treatment and guaranteed fuel distribution, arguing that technical boat repairs should not result in the loss of subsidies.
