Fishing boat 'El Terrible' dismantled after refloat in Xàbia

The wooden fishing vessel known as “El Terrible” was refloated after sinking in the port of Xàbia, Spain. Divers from the Altea‑based company Algar Servicios Marítimos sealed the waterway that caused the boat to sink three weeks earlier. A 60‑ton crane lifted the five‑year‑abandoned ship onto the shore, where it now sits beside fishermen’s stalls awaiting dismantling.

The incident highlights the broader challenge facing the local fishing sector, with younger generations moving away from traditional maritime occupations. Authorities have also approved the removal of a nearby stranded sailboat, scheduled for extraction in mid‑October.

The vessel will remain in place until it can be taken to a scrapyard, serving as a stark reminder of the decline in generational continuity within the region’s fishing community.
