Fishing sectors face economic challenges in Mexico and Spain

Fishing industry stakeholders in Yucatán, Mexico, are reporting significant economic losses due to “huateo,” a practice involving the irregular subtraction or unauthorized sale of seafood at sea. This activity primarily targets octopus, grouper, and lobster. According to industry representatives, some vessels approach others to purchase catches before they reach formal landing points, often offering higher prices than established legal channels. This practice undermines investors who fund vessel operations, such as fuel and maintenance, by reducing the official volume of catch returned to port.

In the Pontevedra estuary of Spain, the fishing sector is facing a downturn characterized by declining catches and rising operational costs for fuel and gear. Despite lower volumes, the Campelo fish market has regained economic leadership in the region with a turnover of 2.5 million euros, driven by high prices for Japanese clams. Other local markets, including Marín, Portonovo, and Bueu, are also experiencing fluctuations in revenue and catch totals as the sector navigates broader economic challenges.
