Fisk University President Defends $900M Data Center Plan Amid Community Opposition

Fisk University in Nashville announced a $900 million "Quantum Leap" campus master plan that includes a 100,000‑square‑foot Innovation & Technology Center, with 70,000 sq ft earmarked for a data center. President Dr. Agenia Walker Clark told ABC News, “Higher ed is in a different place right now… We’ve got to be innovative, visionary and figure out what it looks like to go forward.”

The proposal has sparked protests, a town‑hall meeting and a petition that gathered 17,000 signatures. Critics cite environmental concerns such as water use and point to recent controversy over a data center in nearby Memphis. Clark emphasized the project is still in the planning stage, saying, “This isn’t something that’s been finalized,” and noted that funding will come from a mix of tax credits, grants and a partnership with the Brennan Center for Justice. Tennessee State Rep. Justin Jones, a Fisk alum, remains unconvinced, questioning the university’s $900 million claim.

University leaders say the data center would strengthen curriculum and expand research opportunities while preserving Fisk’s historic identity.
