Fisterra witnesses rare sighting of four blue whales

A group of tourists experienced a rare natural event near Cabo Fisterra in Galicia, Spain, after witnessing four blue whales (Balaenoptera musculus) swimming close to their vessel. The sighting occurred during a maritime excursion organized by the local company Buceo Fisterra.

The whales, which can exceed 20 meters in length and weigh between 90 and 100 tons, reportedly approached within approximately ten meters of the boat. Fernando Carrillo, manager of Buceo Fisterra, noted that this is the first time the company has sighted four blue whales simultaneously, describing the encounter as extraordinary given how close the animals came to the shore.

While various cetacean species migrate through Galician waters, the appearance of blue whales so near the coastline is considered an unusual biological event. Experts suggest the presence of these animals indicates a high nutrient density in the local marine currents, which attracts megafauna to the submarine canyons of the continental shelf.
