Fit-Cisl confronts medical shortage, signs Turkey union pact

On 6 August, the provincial secretariats of Filt‑Cgil, Fit‑Cisl and Uiltrasporti met the directorate of the Ufficio di sanità marittima, aerea e di frontiera (USMAF) in Livorno to address a long‑standing shortage of doctors responsible for health examinations of maritime workers in Livorno, Piombino and Isola d’Elba. Workers often lack a nearby physician, incurring travel costs, while companies experience scheduling delays. USMAF officials reported that recent calls for applications have attracted no candidates and announced a further call in September, while thanking directors Dr. Mofferdin and Dr. Salvadori for their efforts.

Separately, Fit‑Cisl and the Turkish maritime workers’ union TDS signed a cooperation agreement in Rome. The pact aims to protect seafarers by sharing information, providing mutual assistance in disputes, and collaborating on research and best practices, especially concerning just transition, digitalisation, artificial intelligence and the impact of ongoing armed conflicts. Fit‑Cisl Secretary‑General Monica Mascia highlighted the need for unified union action amid geopolitical instability and cooperation with European and International Transport Workers’ Federations.
