Fitness and balance training for aging populations
New research and fitness guidance emphasize the importance of specific exercise types for maintaining health and mobility. A study from the University of Évora in Portugal, published in ‘Frontiers in Psychology’, suggests that sensorimotor training is particularly effective for individuals over the age of 55. This method combines motor and sensory stimuli to improve coordination, balance, and body control, which is critical for preventing falls.
Falls represent a significant health risk for older populations, with studies indicating that 20 to 30 percent of people over 65 fall at least once a year. Research published in ‘JAMA’ shows that physical training can reduce fall rates as effectively as environmental adjustments or medical interventions.
Additionally, seasonal fitness advice highlights the benefits of outdoor exercise during autumn. Moderate temperatures around 15 degrees Celsius are considered ideal for training as they place less strain on the cardiovascular system compared to heat. Regular outdoor activity is also noted for its ability to strengthen the immune system and improve mood.
