Fitness and muscle mass maintenance for adults over 50

Maintaining physical health and performance after age 50 requires a strategic approach to exercise and nutrition. For runners, improving race performance involves prioritizing quality over quantity through three specific training methods: interval training to build cardiovascular capacity, tempo runs to sustain a controlled pace, and long runs to develop physical and mental endurance.

To combat the natural loss of muscle tissue and strength associated with aging, strength training is essential. While aging can alter how muscles respond to stimuli, individuals can still gain muscle mass through resistance exercises such as weights, elastic bands, or bodyweight movements. For adults aged 65 and older, it is recommended to perform strengthening activities for major muscle groups at least two days per week, focusing on movements like squats, rows, and core stability exercises.
