Fitness apps may cause frustration and guilt, study finds

A study conducted by University College London and Loughborough University suggests that fitness applications tracking steps, calories, or sleep may lead to negative psychological effects. By analyzing over 58,000 social media posts, researchers identified instances of frustration, guilt, and shame among users who fail to meet the specific goals set by these tools.

Researcher Paulina Bondaronek noted that application algorithms often fail to account for individual differences and daily life circumstances. This lack of personalization can result in demotivation rather than encouragement. Experts suggest that instead of strictly adhering to app-defined metrics, individuals should focus on finding sustainable physical activity routines tailored to their specific needs.
