Fitness expert recommends recovery habits for adults over 35
Fitness coach Jacob Zemer suggests that for adults over the age of 35, post-workout recovery is as critical as the exercise itself for maintaining strength and longevity. As individuals age, muscles often become less responsive to protein and other signals used for tissue repair, making recovery habits essential.
Zemer recommends several key practices, including obtaining seven to nine hours of quality sleep and maintaining regular medical checkups. He emphasizes the importance of monitoring hormone levels and overall bodily function through lab work to identify issues that might hinder recovery.
Additional recovery strategies include heat exposure, such as saunas or hot showers, to improve circulation and nutrient delivery to muscles. Stretching is also recommended to address muscle shortening following exercise. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force further notes that preventive testing should be tailored to age, gender, and medical history, recommending screenings for conditions like high blood pressure, osteoporosis, and diabetes.
