Fitness experts identify key mobility warning signs for adults over 50

Health and fitness experts are highlighting specific physical warning signs that may indicate declining balance and mobility in individuals over the age of 50.

Trainers note that needing to look at the ground constantly while walking or frequently needing to lean on objects for support can be indicators of worsening equilibrium. Other signs of declining physical condition include difficulty standing on one leg, insecurity when descending stairs, or struggling to walk on irregular surfaces.

Functional movements are also critical indicators of health. Manuel Herrero, CEO of KOKOA HEALTH CLUB, emphasizes that the ability to get up from the floor is a vital skill as it requires a combination of ankle, knee, and hip mobility, as well as leg strength and core control. Additionally, difficulty sitting down and standing up from a chair without using hands can signal a need to review leg strength and trunk control. Experts suggest that adapted strength training can help maintain these essential capacities and autonomy during aging.
