Fitness wearable accuracy varies between chest straps and smartwatches
Fitness wearable technology continues to evolve, though accuracy varies significantly depending on the device type and the metric being measured. Chest strap heart rate monitors, such as the Polar H10 and Wahoo TRACKR, are noted for providing superior data compared to wrist-based wearables. These chest-worn sensors offer stronger signal quality, particularly during high-intensity interval training, rapid pace changes, or heavy sweating, which can compromise the optical accuracy of wrist-based devices.
While heart rate monitoring has seen improvements, the accuracy of calorie burn estimation remains a significant challenge. Most fitness trackers, including smartwatches from Apple and Fitbit, rely on motion data from accelerometers and heart rate readings to calculate caloric expenditure. However, these devices often produce inconsistent results, and even scientific studies struggle to provide a definitive standard for calorie-tracking accuracy in consumer wearables.
