Fito Páez calls for preservation of Argentine musical heritage

Musician Fito Páez has called for the preservation of Argentina's musical heritage, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the legacy of foundational artists. During an interview with Mario Pergolini on the program ‘Otro día perdido’, Páez reflected on his formative years working with Charly García, whom he described as a master and a vital performer and director.

Páez expressed concern regarding the cultural memory of younger generations, noting that during a past concert dedicated to García's repertoire, many audience members were unfamiliar with his songs. He remarked, “A city that does not remember Charly is very strong. It is not a passing episode.”

Expanding his reflection to the broader national identity, Páez linked the works of García and Luis Alberto Spinetta—whom he described as a brother—to a continuous musical tradition that includes figures such as Carlos Gardel, Atahualpa Yupanqui, and Gustavo ‘Cuchi’ Leguizamón. He defined music as the “emotional memory of a people” and argued that the focus should remain on strengthening this collective artistic patrimony rather than engaging in cultural battles.
