Fitzroy River selected as 2032 Olympic rowing venue
The Fitzroy River in Queensland has been endorsed by World Rowing and Paddle Australia as the venue for rowing and canoe events during the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The Games Independent Infrastructure and Coordination Authority (GIICA) confirmed the site is safe and suitable for competition, despite reports of approximately 500 crocodiles inhabiting the river.
Following the announcement, the BBC issued a correction after mistakenly using footage of the Fitzroy River in Western Australia to depict the Queensland venue. Australian officials, including Senator Matt Canavan, criticized the initial coverage, though the broadcaster has since updated its content.
In addition to rowing, the city of Rockhampton is seeking to host further Olympic events. Discussions are underway regarding the use of the redeveloped Browne Park (Aurizon Stadium) for rectangular sports such as rugby sevens, soccer, or lacrosse, depending on the final 2032 sports program.
