Fiumicino Airport authorities intercept 96 million euros in currency violations

Authorities at Fiumicino Airport have intercepted over 96.7 million euros moved in violation of currency regulations. Since the beginning of 2026, inspections conducted by the Rome Provincial Command of the Guardia di Finanza and officials from the Customs and Monopolies Agency have identified 412 violations.

Of the total currency movements intercepted, which amounted to approximately 131.5 million euros, more than 2.5 million euros were subject to administrative seizure. Additionally, passengers avoided the seizure of approximately 14.2 million euros by paying immediate penalties to the Treasury, calculated at a rate between 15% and 30% of the amount exceeding the legal 10,000 euro limit.

The enforcement follows new rules introduced by Legislative Decree no. 211 of 2024, which aligned Italian law with European provisions regarding cross-border cash flows. These reforms increased sanctions and established clearer distinctions between total omission of customs declarations and inaccurate or incomplete filings. Data analysis indicated that the primary geographic destinations for outgoing cash were China (48.94%) and Egypt (32.63%).
