Fiumicino Airport begins runway maintenance causing noise increases

Aeroporti di Roma has announced scheduled maintenance on Runway 3 (16L) at Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino Airport. The works are set to take place over two upcoming weekends: from September 11 to 13, and from September 18 to 20.

Due to the closure of Runway 3, air traffic will be redirected to other available runways. This reorganization is expected to cause a substantial acoustic impact on nearby residential areas as takeoff and landing flows increase over the remaining runways. Aeroporti di Roma has issued apologies for the temporary noise increase, stating that the maintenance is part of a broader infrastructure modernization and requalification program.

CEO Marco Troncone emphasized the necessity of these actions to ensure transport sovereignty and maintain competitiveness. The management company noted that future infrastructure improvements, including potential new runway configurations, are intended to redistribute traffic more efficiently and reduce long-term noise pressure on densely populated areas.
