Fiumicino Airport expansion plan targets 100 million passengers

Aeroporti di Roma (Adr) has presented a development plan for Fiumicino Airport aimed at increasing capacity to 100 million passengers per year. The project involves a total investment of 9 billion euros and includes the construction of a new terminal featuring 76 gates.

The expansion is expected to bolster the economy of the Lazio region by strengthening tourism, logistics, and employment. However, the plan has raised concerns among local residents regarding increased noise and pressure on local infrastructure. Adr has stated that the project intends to ‘reduce noise on the exposed population by up to 80%’, though residents are seeking concrete data and guarantees to ensure these environmental promises are met.

Additional challenges noted include potential increases in traffic congestion, the need for efficient public transport, and the management of land consumption.
