Five Canadian provinces implement minimum wage increases

Five Canadian provinces—Ontario, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan—implemented minimum wage increases on October 1. In Ontario, the wage rose from $17.60 to $17.95 per hour, an adjustment tied to a 1.9 per cent Consumer Price Index. This increase affects more than 700,000 workers in the province.

Despite these adjustments, researchers argue the increases are insufficient to address the current affordability crisis. Data from the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives indicates that the new rates fall significantly short of the ‘rental wage’ required to afford housing in major cities. For instance, Saskatchewan’s new minimum wage of $15.70 is approximately $7 per hour below the amount needed to afford a one-bedroom apartment in Regina or Saskatoon, while Nova Scotia’s $17 rate is nearly $10 per hour below the requirement for Halifax.
