Puerto Aventuras mayor arrested for aggravated extortion

The Quintana Roo State Attorney General's Office has arrested Gilberto Gómez Martínez, the mayor of Puerto Aventuras, along with his nephew, Jorge Montalvo Gómez, and municipal official Karla Paola Ochoa Aburto.

The trio is accused of aggravated extortion targeting local merchants. Investigations indicate that the scheme began earlier this year when municipal staff allegedly pressured a business owner to pay for supposedly free documentation.

According to official reports, the suspects used threats of violence and loss of merchandise to demand weekly payments. Following their arrest on October 15, the individuals were placed at the disposal of a local judge to determine their legal status.
