Five killed in head‑on crash on Northern Territory's Stuart Highway

A head‑on collision on the Stuart Highway, about 75 km east of Darwin, killed five people on Wednesday around 12:50 pm. A Ford Ranger utility crossed onto the wrong side of the road and struck a southbound Toyota HiAce van. Both vehicles were severely damaged and caught fire, preventing occupants from being rescued.

The victims were a 69‑year‑old woman traveling alone in the Toyota and four occupants of the Ranger – a 23‑year‑old male driver, a 23‑year‑old female passenger, a 36‑year‑old man and a 32‑year‑old woman. Police investigators said witnesses reported the Ranger was travelling at excessive speed and overtaking dangerously before the impact. Detective Senior Sergeant Michael Schumacher called the incident "incredibly tragic" and urged anyone with information to contact police. The crash site remains a crime scene with detours and expected traffic delays.

Northern Territory Police continue to investigate the cause of the collision while a formal Disaster Victim Identification process proceeds.
